Description:

3-Day Gorilla Trekking Itinerary – Bwindi I National Park

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala/Entebbe to Bwindi

Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in either Kampala or Entebbe. The journey to Bwindi is approximately 512 km and takes around 9 hours, passing through Uganda’s scenic countryside. En route, you’ll stop at the Equator Monument in Kayabwe for a quick photo opportunity and continue to Igongo Cultural Centre in Mbarara for a hearty lunch. The drive then ascends into the lush Kigezi Highlands, also known as the “Switzerland of Africa.” Depending on where your gorilla trekking permit is booked (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo sector), you’ll be dropped off at your lodge for check-in, dinner, and overnight. Use the evening to prepare your gear for the next day’s trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Batwa Community Visit

After an early breakfast, report to the park headquarters by 7:30 a.m. for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You’ll join a small group of up to 8 trekkers and set off into the forest in search of one of Bwindi’s habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek can range from 1 to 5 hours depending on the location of the gorillas and can be physically demanding due to the dense vegetation and steep terrain. Porters are available to assist with bags and support during the hike. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend one magical hour observing them—watching the silverback, females, and playful juveniles interact in their natural habitat. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, take a cultural walk to visit the Batwa pygmies, the original forest inhabitants. Displaced when the park was created, the Batwa now earn a living by demonstrating traditional hunting, gathering, and survival skills to visitors. If you are in the Buhoma sector, you may also visit Ride 4 a Woman, a local initiative supporting women through handcrafts and tourism. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Return to Kampala or Transfer to Kigali After breakfast, check out and begin the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. Alternatively, if your outbound flight is from Rwanda, it’s possible to transfer directly to Kigali, which is a shorter and more convenient option depending on your onward travel plans. End of your 3-day gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi.
