David Sheldrick Wildlife trust

Destination: Kenya Safaris
Country: Kenya
Description:

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – Nairobi Elephant Orphanage Visit Located at the western edge of Nairobi National Park, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust offers an extraordinary experience: witnessing baby elephants being bottle-fed and playing in the mud under the care of dedicated keepers. This world-renowned orphanage is the most successful rescue and rehabilitation center for orphaned elephants and rhinos in Africa. Founded in memory of David Sheldrick, the pioneering warden of Tsavo National Park, the trust was led for decades by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who developed the life-saving milk formula and rearing techniques now used across the continent. Though she passed away in 2018, her legacy lives on in the continued care and rehabilitation of hundreds of orphaned calves. The center is open to visitors for one hour daily (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM). During this session, keepers introduce the young elephants, recounting their names, rescue stories, and progress. As the elephants enjoy playtime—splashing in mud baths or mock-charging each other—visitors can take photos from behind a rope barrier just a few meters away. The youngest orphans receive round-the-clock attention from individual keepers who even sleep in the stables to offer companionship. This level of care is crucial for the calves' emotional and physical development, ensuring they are prepared for eventual reintegration into the wild. Visitors also have the opportunity to adopt an elephant, helping support its care and the wider conservation mission of the Trust. This experience is not just heartwarming but deeply educational—a rare, close-up look at the dedication behind wildlife conservation in Kenya.
