Karen Blixen Museum Visit – Colonial Heritage Day Tour in Nairobi

A visit to the Karen Blixen Museum is a fascinating short excursion into Kenya’s colonial past. Located at the foot of the Ngong Hills in the leafy suburb of Karen (named after her), this museum is the former home of Baroness Karen Blixen, the Danish author of the famous memoir Out of Africa. Depart from your hotel and drive toward the historic farmhouse, once the centerpiece of a 6,000-acre coffee estate. Built in 1910 and set against the backdrop of natural forest and the rolling hills beyond, the house became Blixen’s home and writing sanctuary during her time in British East Africa.

On arrival, enjoy a guided tour through the museum, where much of the original colonial furniture, personal artifacts, and wildlife trophies have been carefully preserved or restored. The kitchen, complete with a Dove Stove and early 20th-century cooking utensils, has been fully reconstructed and is open for viewing. Visitors can also see the foundations of the coffee-processing plant and old farming machinery, part of the estate’s reconstruction efforts.

The tour offers a deeply personal and visual account of settler life in Kenya during the early 1900s. It’s not only a literary pilgrimage for fans of Blixen’s work but also a cultural experience that brings to life the complexity of colonial history in East Africa. The museum grounds are also used for research, private events, and educational programs, with all proceeds supporting the preservation of the site and other regional museums. After the tour, you’ll return to your hotel, enriched with a new perspective on Kenya’s heritage.
