Signature Safari

1 Day Ziwa Rhino Trekking

Experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with rhinos on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Home to over 30 southern white rhinos freely roaming across 70 square kilometers, this sanctuary plays a vital role in rhino conservation. These majestic animals, part of Africa’s Big Five, were declared extinct in Uganda during the 1980s due to poaching. Thanks to efforts by the Rhino Fund Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Authority, a thriving population is being bred to eventually reintroduce rhinos back into the country’s protected areas. Your visit not only offers an unforgettable wildlife encounter but also helps raise crucial funds to support this important conservation mission.

About this tour

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Visit – Rhino Tracking & More Wildlife Encounters

Leaving early at 7:00 a.m., the drive from Kampala to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary covers approximately 176 km and takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic and stops along the way. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a sanctuary guide who will brief you on the rhino tracking activity—the sanctuary’s main attraction and a unique opportunity to see white rhinos on foot. The rhinos roam freely in a 7,000-hectare reserve, and depending on their location, you may walk or be transported part of the way. Once located, you’ll spend up to an hour observing them at a safe distance, learning about their behavior and the conservation efforts underway to protect and reintroduce rhinos into Uganda’s national parks. Visitors are expected to follow safety guidelines for a respectful and enjoyable encounter

. Additional Experiences at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Shoebill Trek:

For bird enthusiasts, a guided canoe ride through Lugogo Swamp offers a chance to spot the rare and prehistoric-looking shoebill stork, along with other birdlife like the woodland kingfisher. This activity lasts 1–2 hours and is best done in the early morning or late afternoon when bird activity is highest.

Nature Walks: Explore more of the sanctuary on a 2-hour guided nature walk, where you may see Uganda kobs, oribis, warthogs, waterbucks, and even the elusive pangolin, all while learning about the area’s rich flora and fauna.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is more than just a rhino tracking site—it's a vital conservation project and a great stopover on the way to Murchison Falls or as a rewarding day trip from Kampala.
