5 DAYS MT KENYA CHOGORIA ROUTE ASCENT
This 5-day Mount Kenya trek offers a scenic and rewarding journey to Point Lenana via the Chogoria Route, descending through Sirimon. The route showcases forests, alpine lakes, dramatic ridges, and panoramic views culminating in a sunrise summit experience.
About this tour
You will depart Nairobi at 7:00 am and drive through the scenic agricultural highlands toward Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, a 4x4 vehicle will take you to the edge of the bamboo forest, where the trek begins. A 10km hike through lush bamboo leads you to Mount Kenya Bandas, where you will have dinner and overnight at Anabas Camp.
After breakfast and porter load arrangements, you will begin your trek toward Lake Ellis. Taking a longer, scenic route past Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giants Billiards Table, you'll enjoy beautiful views and lunch by a stream. The hike then ascends to a campsite at about 3,600m, away from the main tourist trails, for a peaceful overnight stay.
Day 3 begins with an early start as you climb a ridge with stunning views toward Gorges Valley, eventually joining the main Chogoria route around 4,100m. After lunch by a stream, you'll hike for another hour to Mintos Hut (4,200m), where you'll spend the night. A short walk in the afternoon to the "Temple" cliff provides dramatic views and a moment of awe.
On Day 4, you’ll wake up at 3:00 am for a pre-dawn ascent to Point Lenana (4,985m). Reaching the summit at sunrise offers a spectacular reward for the effort. Afterward, you’ll descend to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast, then continue for about five hours through the beautiful Mackinder’s Valley to Judmiere Camp (Old Moses Camp) at 3,300m for dinner and an overnight stay.
You'll have a final, short descent of about two hours to the Sirimon Gate, where your vehicle will be waiting to take you to your next safari destination or back to Nairobi.
